What is Bluesky?

Bluesky is a social network — posts, replies, follows, the familiar shape. What makes it different is underneath: it runs on an open protocol, so no single company owns your account, your followers, or what you see.

Every song on Kanada Radio came from someone posting it there. That is the whole supply chain.

How it actually differs

You can leave without starting over

Your identity is a handle you can attach to a domain you own, and your posts live in a repository that can move between servers. On a traditional platform, leaving means abandoning your followers and your history. Here, they can come with you. That single fact changes the relationship — a company that cannot trap you has to keep you.

You choose the algorithm

Instead of one feed tuned to maximise the time you spend there, Bluesky has custom feeds that anyone can build and anyone can subscribe to. You can pick a chronological feed of the people you follow, or a feed about one topic, and switch whenever you like. The ranking is a choice you make rather than one made for you.

Moderation you can adjust

Labelling is done by services you subscribe to, so you can layer on the filtering you want rather than accepting one company’s single global setting. Kanada Radio uses those same labels to keep adult and graphic content out of the queue.

No ads in the feed

There is no advertising product in Bluesky itself, so the feed is not competing for your attention on someone else’s behalf. It is a quieter place, and that shows in what people post — including the music.

Being honest about the trade-offs

It is smaller than the big platforms, so some communities simply are not there yet. The open protocol is still maturing. And “you can move servers” is mostly theoretical for now — the tooling exists, but most people are on the main one. It is a better foundation, not a finished product.

How to join

1. Go to bsky.app and create an account. It is free and takes a minute.
2. You will get a handle like yourname.bsky.social. That is what you would use to sign in here.
3. Search #musicsky and follow a few people whose taste you like. Their posts start feeding the stations you hear here.
4. Post a song with #musicsky and it will turn up on Kanada Radio, same as everyone else’s.

What signing in here gets you

• Like and follow — one click, straight from the player, landing on the real post and the real account.
• Share — post a track to your own feed without leaving the page.

You approve all of that on Bluesky’s own site. Kanada Radio never sees your password, and you can revoke it any time from your Bluesky settings.
